Prof. Oleg Yarosh discusses conversion to Islam in the Western Sufi

Professor Oleg Yarosh, a senior research fellow with the Polish Institute of Advanced Studies PIASt, argues that in the Western Sufi communities many members do not formally convert to Islam, and those who convert, do this because of connection to Shaikh as a charismatic leader.

Professor Yarosh particularly focuses on religious authority structures and their impact on the process of intrareligious conversion, defined as the process of religious learning and gradual adoption of religious norms and practices.

The collective monograph addresses theoretical issues related to conversion and leaving Islam and brings case studies from Western and Central Europe, the United States, Canada, and the Middle East.
